ObamaCare may have suffered another major blow. Today on Fox News Sunday, Senator Kent Conrad D-ND began playing Taps for the Public Option:

WASHINGTON (CNN) — A key Senate negotiator said Sunday that President Barack Obama should drop his push for a government-funded public health insurance option because the Senate will never pass it.

Democratic Sen. Kent Conrad of North Dakota said it was futile to continue to "chase that rabbit" due to the lack of 60 Senate votes needed to overcome a filibuster.

"The fact of the matter is there are not the votes in the United States Senate for a public option. There never have been," Conrad said on "FOX News Sunday."

For Obama and his progressive supporters, the Public Option is the whole reason for doing health care reform. It is suppose to act as the gateway to their Nirvana…a single payer system. Should Obama fail to deliver a Public Option, he will loose a lot of hard left support and those are the folks who did all of the grunt work to get him elected.

Obama also has two other problems if he caves on the Public Option.

  1. Dem infighting. The hard left will lash out at moderate Dems for killing the dream. Moderate Dems will feel free to defy Obama anytime he does not have public support.
  2. A clear victory for the Silent Majority. Should the true guts of ObamaCare fail, the Silent Majority will be more embolden with their activism. They may even try to bring an end to any all Washington spending or force Obama to govern from the center like he promised.
